The topic of the retreat is The Bardo Thodol. The literal translation is the Book of “Natural Liberation by hearing in the intermediate States”. The popular translation is the “Tibetan Book of the Dead”. This terma book was composed in the 8th century by Guru Rinpoche Padmasamdhava, transcribed and buried by his consort Yeshe Tsyogal to be later discovered and revealed by Karma Lingpa in the 14th century.
The Bardo Thodol is the guide book to be read to a dying and dead person in order to lead them to enlightenment in the bardo of reality upon being liberated from their body. The book, therefore, is also a guide book for the living in order to prepare themselves for the eventual death of the body and liberation of what we might call spirit. It is a meditation manual that describes the symbolic appearances associated with the deities within ourselves that lead us to liberation from the emotional afflictions, mental preconceptions and habitual tendencies that bind humans to the cycles of existence.
