SUMMARY:“Anger”\, Your Compassionate Guru with Khenmo Konchog Nyima Drolma
DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to register for the weekend by Monday\, December 4th to help us with our planning. Thank you! \nThere will also be a public talk on Friday (click for more info) – no fee\, donations are welcome. \nMany are finding these chaotic times challenging. As practitioners\, life is our best teacher. Because we have mind\, we have emotions and they can and do become our guru as we apply the Dharma. Khenmo will give meditation instructions and teach from the three yanas on anger and related states of mind. She will use three sources: Buddha\, who in the sutras\, gave very specific teachings on relating to anger; Shantideva’s Courage of Patience chapter that illuminates a wise and compassionate response to understanding the sources of anger and the value of taming it and Pema Chodron’s teachings on anger from Go to the Places that Scare You. \nThis retreat will incorporate Dharma talks with group sitting and walking meditation. Every day will have two Dharma talks and several hours of Calm Abiding silent meditation. In this way\, you will be able to safely observe anger within the context of sitting meditation and directly experiment with techniques of pacification\, learning the wisdom of facing our fears and the healing balm of the Dharma. It is recommended that you come for the whole retreat as the Shantideva chapter will be woven throughout the weekend. You may come for the day only but please read the complete Shantideva Chapter on Patience so you are prepared if you miss the early talks. \nAbout Khenmo Konchog Nyima Drolma\nAbbess of Vajra Dakini Nunnery\, Khenmo Konchog Nyima Drolma has trained with the foremost spiritual teachers of our time including H.H. SUMMARY:Roots of Mindfulness with Khenmo Konchog Nyima Drolma
DESCRIPTION:HH Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche encouraged us to look to the sutras for the direct words of the Buddha in his advice for 21st Century practitioners. In the sutras we find detailed instructions on mindfulness\, the key building block of all meditation and of our understanding of the fruition of mahamudra. \nKhenmo Drolma will give an illustrated Dharma Talk on the foundations of mindfulness from the perspective of both the early Buddhist and Lord Jigten Sumgon’s view. The presentation will focus on enhancing our understanding of mind and practice! \nNo fee: Donations are welcome \nIf you will be attending the Saturday December 9th & Sunday December 10th retreat (click to read more)\, we would like to invite you to register for the weekend by Monday December 4th to help us with our planning. SUMMARY:Ngondro Practice
DESCRIPTION:Ngondro means preliminary. This set of 3-5 practices is traditionally accomplished before one begins training in the more subtle practices of the Tantras\, Mahamudra\, or Dzogchen. While referred to as preliminary many masters have stated that Ngondro is a complete method by which one can attain enlightenment. \nOn Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m. we will meet to discuss and practice the preliminaries (ngondro). All current ngondro practitioners\, regardless of the lineage you follow and version of the practice that you engage in are welcome. \nSessions will be divided into a period of discussion followed by a period of practice. Participants may practice whichever section of ngondro they are currently accumulating. Whether you are just starting your practice\, or anywhere in the midst of the process please join us for support\, encouragement and group practice. \nIf you would like to practice ngondro\, but have not received instruction\, please send an email: admin@gardrolmacourses.com to arrange a time for an individual introduction to and instructions for beginning the practice. \nThese practices are powerful and efficient methods for accumulating merit and purifying obscurations. Practically\, these trainings help develop positive\, virtuous qualities\, weaken and diminish obscurations and negative qualities\, and render the practitioner receptive to more subtle teachings.

SUMMARY:Buddha Amitabha Practice
DESCRIPTION:In this practice one visualizes Amitabha and his retinue and recites his six  syllable mantra. Through this practice we purify our obscurations and accumulate merit and wisdom while cultivating the causes for rebirth in Dewachen\, Amitabha’s pureland. This is a traditional practice associated with death and dying in many Mahayana and Vajrayana buddhist traditions. \nDuring this event we will offer prayers and the lighting of candles for beings who have recently deceased and for all beings.

SUMMARY:Beginner's Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:We are fortunate to have our teacher Khenpo Samdup Rinpoche offer these teachings and participate in the discussion when available. When Khenpo is unable to attend a senior student will facilitate and lead the discussions. \nEach week the class consists of two parts:\nBasic Concepts and Meditation.  \nIn the first half of each class we hold a casual and informal discussion of the concepts that form the core of the Buddhist path.  These basic concepts are the first steps for all Buddhist practitioners\, and include topics such as: \n\nRefuge To take refuge in the Buddha\, Dharma and Sangha\, the basis of Buddhism.\nFour Noble Truths contain the essence of the Buddha’s teachings. It was these four principles that the Buddha came to understand during his meditation under the Bodhi tree.\nFour thoughts that turn the mind. 1) Precious Human Life 2) Death and Impermanence 3) Karma (Cause and Effect) 4) Suffering (Unsatisfactory Nature of Samsara).\nThe Two Truths. This doctrine tells us that existence can be understood as both ultimate and conventional (or\, absolute and relative). Conventional truth is how we usually see the world\, a place full of diverse and distinctive things and beings. Ultimate truth is that there are no distinctive things or beings. To say there are no distinctive things or beings is not to say that nothing exists; it is saying that there are no distinctions.\nSix Paramitas. The six perfections (paramitas) are: generosity\, ethics\, patience\, enthusiastic perseverance\, concentration and wisdom. For each perfection we will be looking at its meaning\, the method of following it\, its divisions and what should be done in the practice of that perfection.\nKarma Cause and Effect. The fundamental law of karma\, cause and effect\, is that the result of a virtuous deed is always happiness\, and the result of a non-virtuous deed is always suffering.\nBodhichitta. In Sanskrit\, bodhi means “awakened” and chitta means “mind” or “heart.” Bodhichitta — “awakened heart-mind” — is the compassionate wish to realize enlightenment for all beings\, not just oneself. Through Bodhichitta\, the desire to attain enlightenment transcends the narrow interests of the individual self.\nThree Roots and the Dharma Protectors. The three roots are the Guru\, Yidam and Dakini. The Guru is the root of blessings\, the Yidam of accomplishment\, and the Dakini of activity.  A Dharma Protector is an emanation of a Buddha or a Bodhisattva whose main functions are to avert the inner and outer obstacles that prevent practitioners from gaining spiritual realizations\, and to arrange all the necessary conditions for their practice.\nSeven Branches which involves seven different ways of accumulating merit\, each of which serves a specific purpose. The offerings are: prostration\, offering\, confession\, rejoicing\, requesting the turning of the wheel of the dharma\, asking Buddha not to pass into parinirvana\, and dedication of merit.\nThree Vehicles. The three vehicles or paths of Buddhism which are: Hinayana\, Mahayana and Vajrayana.\nVajrayana Empowerments. This is the process by which a lama with experience in the particular practice confers on others the description\, explanation\, visualization and order of the practice\, along with appropriate offerings and specific mantras.\nSix Bardo. In Tibetan Buddhism\, a bardo is an in-between state. The word is often used to mean a state between death and rebirth.\n\nEach week the beginning concept class consists of a teaching one of the above topics along with open discussion time for questions and answers. It is important to have a solid foundation to fully understand the continuing path of Buddhism and this is the perfect\, open atmosphere in which to begin. \nIn the second half of the class each week meditation is taught: \n\nShamatha\, or Calm Abiding\, meditation helps to free the mind from disturbing emotions and conceptual thinking processes. It brings the mind under control\, under discipline\, with some degree of single pointed focus\, with full alertness of mind. By doing this meditation\, the individual is able to suppress disturbing emotions and gain inner peace\, harmony and balance. The basics of how to practice are discussed each week.\n\nThe study of concepts and the practice of meditation are core components of the Buddhist path. Combining the two greatly facilitates the practitioner’s progress.

SUMMARY:White Dzambhala and One Thousand Arm Chenrezig Empowerments and Nyungne Teachings
DESCRIPTION:Gar Drolma is thrilled to welcome back Bardor Tulku Rinpoche. Rinpoche is a beloved teacher from the Nyingma and Karma Kagyu traditions. He has taught in the west since 1977\, guiding countless students on the Buddhist path. Rinpoche is main lineage holder of the treasure teaching of Terchen Barway Dorje\, a visionary 19th century Tibetan master. He is the founder and director of Kunzang Palchen Ling\, a retreat center in Red Hook\, NY where he teaches extensively. \nFriday October 27th\n7:00pm – 9:00pm\nWhite Dzambhala Empowerment \n*Refuge is required for empowerments. If you are interested in the empowerment but have not taken refuge. Rinpoche will be available to give refuge. Please contact Linda McCart at 614-397-3484 to make arrangements. \nBardor Tulku will bestow the empowerment of the Buddha White Dzambhala. White Dzambhala is a connected with wealth\, prosperity\, and good fortune. Empowerment is a beautiful ritual that introduces participants to their true nature as enlightened body\, speech\, and mind. This introduction connects participants with their primordially enlightened nature and grants permission for developing the connection via the methods of visualization\, mantra recitation\, and meditation. Engaging in the practice of White Dzambhala is said to create causes for material wealth and success\, allowing one to more effectively practice generosity to benefit other beings. \n\nSaturday October 28th \n10:00am – 12:00pm\nWhite Dzhambala Teachings \nBardor Tulku will explain the method of practicing White Dzambhala. \n12:00pm – 3:00pm: Lunch Break* \n3:00pm – 5:00pm\n1000 Arm Chenrezig Empowerment \n*Refuge is required for empowerments. If you are interested in the empowerment but have not taken refuge. Rinpoche will be available to give refuge. Please contact Linda McCart at 614-397-3484 to make arrangements. \nChenrezig is renowned as the embodiment of the compassion of all the Buddhas. We develop the enlightened quality of compassion through Chenrezig practice and mantra recitation as well as by compassionate conduct toward all beings. \n\nSunday October 29th\n10:00am – 12:00pm\nNyungne Teachings \nThe Nyungne Retreat is a Tibetan Buddhist practice designed especially for lay practitioners to purify negative karma and accumulate merit and wisdom. It is a one day (Nyingne) or two day (Nyungne) practice focusing on keeping strict vows\, generating the Bodhisattva attitude\, and reciting the sadhana of the 1000-armed Chenrezig\, the Bodhisattva of compassion. In this way\, the Nyungne practice cultivates all three vehicles of Buddhism. The vows or 8 precepts that we take include not killing\, stealing\, or lying\, and abstaining from sexual activity\, intoxicants\, luxury\, ornaments\, and entertainment for the duration of the retreat. \n12:00pm – 2:00pm : Lunch Break* \n2:00pm – 5:00pm\nNyungne Teachings \n*Lunch will be offered \nFEES: \n$50 – 100 per day\n$150 – 300 for full weekend\nFees are on a sliding scale to accommodate all who would like to attend. \n\n\nIf you are interested in attending but need financial support\, please feel free to contact us at sangha@gardrolma.org or 937-252-2220. \n

SUMMARY:Your Mind Is Your Teacher: Self Awakening Through Contemplative Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Khenpo Gawang will give four sessions of teaching about contemplative meditation on the Four Seals based on his excellent book “Your Mind is Your Teacher“.\nPreview his book by clicking here. \nKhenpo Gawang has been a monk for more than thirty years and trained with many eminent Tibetan masters\, most notably His Holiness Penor Rinpoche\, who was the supreme head of the Nyingma tradition for many years. Khenpo has completed the traditional  nine year monastic study curriculum\, in recognition of his achievement he was enthroned as Khenpo or “Abbot” by His Holiness Penor Rinpoche in 2006. He has taught in the United States since 2004 and speaks fluent English. Khenpo has translated several important traditional texts. He lives and teaches at the Pemakarpo Meditation Center in Memphis\, Tennessee. \nFriday\, October 6th\,  7 – 8:30pm\nDeveloping a Peaceful Mind Thru Mindfulness Meditation \nKhenpo will give teachings on calm abiding or Shiné meditation. This simple practice develops mindfulness and focus\, allowing the mind to gradually come to rest in a relaxed\, calm state. This process has countless benefits including more stable focus\, a general sense of relaxation\, and increased positive feelings. This stability is an indispensable aid for a happy life and the further development of wisdom and compassion. \nNo fee for Friday talk – donations are welcome \n\nKhenpo Gawang \nSaturday October 7th and Sunday October 8th\nYour Mind Is Your Teacher: Self Awakening Through Contemplative Meditation \nThe Four Seals are: \n\nAll compounded phenomena are impermanent\nAll defiled states are suffering\nAll phenomena are empty\nNirvana is peace\n\nKhenpo will explain these profound statements in clear language and teach how to use them as the basis of contemplative or analytical meditation that gradually reduces and eventually eliminates disturbing emotions and suffering. Regarding the benefits of such contemplation Khenpo Gawang states: \n“ Through contemplative practice we learn to investigate reality by looking carefully at our own mind and everyday life. Through this we transform our view-the reality that we take to be truth-and this new outlook will transform our experience of everyday life.” \nTeaching schedule (repeated both days) \n10:00am-12:00pm:  Teachings & Meditation Practice \n12:00pm-1:30pm:  Lunch* \n1:30pm-4:30pm: Teachings & Meditation Practice \n*Lunch will be provided \nFees: \n$30 per day\,  $50 for the weekend \nRegistration will be at the door beginning at 9:00am
