SUMMARY:Buddhist and Western Concepts Study Group
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at Gar Drolma for the continuing study group; Buddhist and Western Concepts Study Group.  The group will meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  \nThe discussions will include reflecting on Buddhist and Western philosophical thinking about the mind\, reviewing neurophysiological evidence concerning the body and mind\, and discussing recent theories and ideas from physics. We will provide web links each month that provide relevant background information on the topics to be discussed to make it easier for everyone to participate in the discussion. \nThe principal focus of the group is to attempt to reconcile Buddhist ideas and concepts about the body\, mind\, and universe with Western knowledge.  The Discussion Topic for the meeting is provided below.  If you would like to participate but cannot attend at Gar Drolma please consider participating via Skype at: mike-young-skype \nTuesday\, January 9\, 2018 : DREAMS\nDo you dream?  Actually\, everyone dreams\, although approximately only half of all individuals asked say they can remember their dreams.  Why do we dream? A popular Western scientific belief is that we dream to consolidate memory traces from the previous day.  The hippocampus generates synchronized firings of neuronal ensembles that strengthen connections among them\, resulting in the laying down of memories.   \n An alternative Western idea is that dreams embody meaning\, and that they are sent to us in our sleep. But by whom? In the analytic depth psychology of Carl Jung\, there are different types dreams: random dreams\, subjective dreams\, and objective dreams.  Random dreams are a collection of events from the last couple of days and do not convey any meaning (like the scientific model above).  Subjective dreams have a structure and message that conveys meaning about the dreamer’s personal situation. Elements of the dream relate to individuals and places the dreamer knows.  The dream\, if understood\, provides insight into a personal relationship or problem.  In contrast\, objective dreams seem to address issues that a society is facing as it adapts to a changing environment (e.g.\, women moving into the workforce in mass in the 60s-70s which required learning new gender roles and adjusting the care of children). One might say that societal dreams deal with our collective karma. \n In talking to Tibetan Buddhists they seem to have a different dream taxonomy.  They say there are dreams that relate to an individual (similar to Jung’s subjective dream)\, and societal dreams (similar to objective dreams).  This latter type of dreams\, however\, is normally associated with oracles who have had special training to make them ready to receive and understand such dreams. In addition\, Tibetans discuss how meditation practice during the day can influence a practitioner’s dreams at night.  Specifically\, if the practice went well you might see auspicious signs in your dreams (which should be ignored). \n Random and subjective dreams probably arise from an individual’s mind.  But where do societal dreams come from?  Jung postulates the existence of a collective unconscious that we all connect to in the deeper layers of our mind.  More specifically\, Jung proposes that the collective unconscious contains archetypes that could be thought of as programs built up over evolutionary time that contribute to\, or guide\, our adaptation to the changing world.  \n What about the Tibetans\, do they have anything similar to archetypes?  They\, of course\, have deities that can influence individuals.  It is not clear where these deities reside physically\, but they seem to play a similar role to Jung’s archetypes. Interestingly these deities are linked to specific types of meditation practice called deity yoga.  What is interesting about this practice is that in the beginning the deity is external to the practitioner but over time the practitioner becomes the deity.  This has some similarity to the Jungian concept of individuation\, where a patient can identify with the archetype and use it to produce adaptation of an attitude which leads to a more fuller sense of self. \n In this session we will look at how dreams are thought of in Western and Buddhist societies.  We will consider how dreams arise\, the purpose of dreams\, the process through which dreams influence behavior\, and the role archetypes/deities play in influencing individuation/spiritual growth via dreams.  Next month we will likely stay with the topic of dreams and look at the Buddhist practice of dream yoga and the Western concept of lucid dreaming. \nBackground material: \nArchetypes: \nhttps://www.psychologistworld.com/cognitive/carl-jung-analytical-psychology \nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungian_archetypes \nhttp://www.carl-jung.net/archetypes.html \nTibetan Deities: \nhttp://www.khandro.net/deities.htm \nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_deities \nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrathful_deities

SUMMARY:Beginner's Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:We are fortunate to have our teacher Khenpo Samdup Rinpoche offer these teachings and participate in the discussion when available. When Khenpo is unable to attend a senior student will facilitate and lead the discussions. \nEach week the class consists of two parts:\nBasic Concepts and Meditation.  \nIn the first half of each class we hold a casual and informal discussion of the concepts that form the core of the Buddhist path.  These basic concepts are the first steps for all Buddhist practitioners\, and include topics such as: \n\nRefuge To take refuge in the Buddha\, Dharma and Sangha\, the basis of Buddhism.\nFour Noble Truths contain the essence of the Buddha’s teachings. It was these four principles that the Buddha came to understand during his meditation under the Bodhi tree.\nFour thoughts that turn the mind. 1) Precious Human Life 2) Death and Impermanence 3) Karma (Cause and Effect) 4) Suffering (Unsatisfactory Nature of Samsara).\nThe Two Truths. This doctrine tells us that existence can be understood as both ultimate and conventional (or\, absolute and relative). Conventional truth is how we usually see the world\, a place full of diverse and distinctive things and beings. Ultimate truth is that there are no distinctive things or beings. To say there are no distinctive things or beings is not to say that nothing exists; it is saying that there are no distinctions.\nSix Paramitas. The six perfections (paramitas) are: generosity\, ethics\, patience\, enthusiastic perseverance\, concentration and wisdom. For each perfection we will be looking at its meaning\, the method of following it\, its divisions and what should be done in the practice of that perfection.\nKarma Cause and Effect. The fundamental law of karma\, cause and effect\, is that the result of a virtuous deed is always happiness\, and the result of a non-virtuous deed is always suffering.\nBodhichitta. In Sanskrit\, bodhi means “awakened” and chitta means “mind” or “heart.” Bodhichitta — “awakened heart-mind” — is the compassionate wish to realize enlightenment for all beings\, not just oneself. Through Bodhichitta\, the desire to attain enlightenment transcends the narrow interests of the individual self.\nThree Roots and the Dharma Protectors. The three roots are the Guru\, Yidam and Dakini. The Guru is the root of blessings\, the Yidam of accomplishment\, and the Dakini of activity.  A Dharma Protector is an emanation of a Buddha or a Bodhisattva whose main functions are to avert the inner and outer obstacles that prevent practitioners from gaining spiritual realizations\, and to arrange all the necessary conditions for their practice.\nSeven Branches which involves seven different ways of accumulating merit\, each of which serves a specific purpose. The offerings are: prostration\, offering\, confession\, rejoicing\, requesting the turning of the wheel of the dharma\, asking Buddha not to pass into parinirvana\, and dedication of merit.\nThree Vehicles. The three vehicles or paths of Buddhism which are: Hinayana\, Mahayana and Vajrayana.\nVajrayana Empowerments. This is the process by which a lama with experience in the particular practice confers on others the description\, explanation\, visualization and order of the practice\, along with appropriate offerings and specific mantras.\nSix Bardo. In Tibetan Buddhism\, a bardo is an in-between state. The word is often used to mean a state between death and rebirth.\n\nEach week the beginning concept class consists of a teaching one of the above topics along with open discussion time for questions and answers. It is important to have a solid foundation to fully understand the continuing path of Buddhism and this is the perfect\, open atmosphere in which to begin. \nIn the second half of the class each week meditation is taught: \n\nShamatha\, or Calm Abiding\, meditation helps to free the mind from disturbing emotions and conceptual thinking processes. It brings the mind under control\, under discipline\, with some degree of single pointed focus\, with full alertness of mind. By doing this meditation\, the individual is able to suppress disturbing emotions and gain inner peace\, harmony and balance. The basics of how to practice are discussed each week.\n\nThe study of concepts and the practice of meditation are core components of the Buddhist path. Combining the two greatly facilitates the practitioner’s progress.

SUMMARY:“Anger”\, Your Compassionate Guru with Khenmo Konchog Nyima Drolma
DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to register for the weekend by Monday\, December 4th to help us with our planning. Thank you! \nThere will also be a public talk on Friday (click for more info) – no fee\, donations are welcome. \nMany are finding these chaotic times challenging. As practitioners\, life is our best teacher. Because we have mind\, we have emotions and they can and do become our guru as we apply the Dharma. Khenmo will give meditation instructions and teach from the three yanas on anger and related states of mind. She will use three sources: Buddha\, who in the sutras\, gave very specific teachings on relating to anger; Shantideva’s Courage of Patience chapter that illuminates a wise and compassionate response to understanding the sources of anger and the value of taming it and Pema Chodron’s teachings on anger from Go to the Places that Scare You. \nThis retreat will incorporate Dharma talks with group sitting and walking meditation. Every day will have two Dharma talks and several hours of Calm Abiding silent meditation. In this way\, you will be able to safely observe anger within the context of sitting meditation and directly experiment with techniques of pacification\, learning the wisdom of facing our fears and the healing balm of the Dharma. It is recommended that you come for the whole retreat as the Shantideva chapter will be woven throughout the weekend. You may come for the day only but please read the complete Shantideva Chapter on Patience so you are prepared if you miss the early talks. \nAbout Khenmo Konchog Nyima Drolma\nAbbess of Vajra Dakini Nunnery\, Khenmo Konchog Nyima Drolma has trained with the foremost spiritual teachers of our time including H.H.

Additionally\, Khenpo will give the transmission for Phowa (transference) this technique allows accomplished practitioners to die consciously and transfer their consciousness to the pure realm of Amitabha Buddha. \nAfter receiving this transmission\, students engage in diligent practice until unmistakable physical signs of accomplishment occur\, the arising of these signs indicate that the practitioner will be able to successfully implement the practice at the actual time of death.  \n[dropshadowbox align=”center” effect=”lifted-both” width=”75%” height=”” background_color=”#ffffff” border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ] \nRetreatants are recommended to commit to continuous 4-days and nights at Gar Drolma.\nDaily commuting to the retreat will be permitted if all teachings and practices are attended.\nBring clothing\, toiletries\, medications\, bedding\, mats\, mattresses\, etc.\nSimple vegetarian meals will be provided.\nFee includes study and practice books.\n$200 per person/entire retreat (payment below).\n[/dropshadowbox]

SUMMARY:Sunday Morning Practice
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in January we will implement an exciting change to our long standing Sunday morning. These practices will reinforce the content presented by Khenpo during his monthly teachings and help purify the factors which prohibit us from recognizing our innate\, primordially enlightened nature.  \n\nWe will begin practicing “The Excellent Path to Enlightenment A Practice of the Preliminaries of the Fivefold Mahamudra”. This is a concise version of the tantric preliminary practices (tibetan: ngondro)  that was composed by Garchen Rinpoche and transmitted to our sangha at the conclusion of the 6 Yogas of Naropa teachings last year. This short text contains all of the main points of the path of practice in our lineage and can be recited in just a few minutes. During group practice we will recite the practice and spend a few minutes contemplating and accumulating repetitions each of the main sections of the text. \nFollowing this recitation there will be a guided meditation focusing on a topic from Khenpo Samdup Rinpoche’s Stages of Meditation curriculum. The topic of the guided meditation will change once a month following Khenpo’s teaching.\n\nNote: On Dates when the Stages of Meditation Course is being taught\, the Sunday Morning Practice will be suspended.
